Old news, new year

Man fires gun to celebrate new year, is shot by police

BALTIMORE (AP) -

Baltimore police say an officer shot a man who fired a handgun into the air to celebrate the new year, then refused to put it down.

It happened shortly after midnight in west Baltimore. Detective Donny Moses, a police spokesman, says officers were investigating a domestic incident when they heard a gunshot.

They found the man, who refused to drop his gun. An officer opened fire and shot him in the abdomen. Despite being shot, Moses says the 31-year-old man fled, running through one house and into his own home. He then called an ambulance and was taken to a hospital, where he was in serious but stable condition Tuesday.

Moses says the man will face numerous handgun charges. And he says police made at least 21 handgun arrests in the city on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
